Guwahati, the capital of the state of Assam, is a prosperous city, situated on the banks of the Brahmaputra River. The mythological name of this city was Pragjyotishpur. Which was settled by Narakasura. Nilachal hill is situated on one side of the city. On which is situated the famous temple of Goddess Kamakshi (Kamakhya). This temple is one of the 51 Shaktipeeths.

In the forty-eight chapter of the seventh wing of Devi Bhagwat, it is written that, ‘This region is considered to be a great field in the whole earth’. Here the real Mother Durga resides. Worshiping his darshan gets rid of all kinds of obstacles. Those who practice tantra here soon get siddhi. Such glory is difficult to find anywhere else.’ To visit the temple… The temple is situated on a hill called Nilachal, five kilometers from Guwahati Railway Station. The entrance is at the foot of the hill. To go above this entrance, one has to climb a straight climb of one kilometer. Apart from this, a paved road has been made till the top of the mountain. Motor-taxis, which are available in front of the entrance gate, take them to Devipeeth. The height of this Devipeeth is 525 feet above sea level.

This Devipeeth is below the ground. Devipeeth is visible after descending seven steps from the ground and descending ten steps from the left side from there. There is no idol here, just a deep pool, where the mother’s yonipeeth is covered with red cloth. This is the Siddhipeeth, its philosophy is the law of worship. Among the ten Mahavidyas, the name of Shodashidevi is Kamakshi Devi. On its side, Matangi (Saraswati) and Kamala (Lakshmi) are the seat of both the goddesses.

After this it was renovated in 1565 AD. How did the name Kamakhya get? Once due to a curse, Kama Dev, the god of Kama, lost his manhood, who later got freedom from this curse by the genitals and womb of Goddess Shakti. Since then the idol of Goddess Kamakhya was kept here and her worship started. Some people also believe that this is the place where the love between Goddess Sati and Lord Shiva started. In Sanskrit language, love is called Kama, hence this temple was named Kamakhya Devi.Kamakhya Devi Temple

From whom does the flow of blood flow? Kamakhya Devi is also called the goddess of flowing blood. Here the womb and vagina of the goddess are kept in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple, in which blood flows in the month of June. There is a belief among the people that during this time the goddess is in her monthly cycle and during this time the Brahmaputra river located here turns red. During this the temple remains closed for 3 days and this red water is distributed among the devotees who come here. However, the woman’s monthly cycle and this temple shows the creativity of a woman and it tells that woman is the mother of this universe and we should respect her at all costs.
